This series had been developed in 1958 for use in the private residence of an art collector in Columbus Indiana. The construction by the designer couple veered away from the principle of the seat shell.

Design

The chair is designed to adapt to the body of the sitter and make it comfortable. Instead of stretching panel of fabric or leather between the two aluminum side members, the replacement is the elastic seat.  

Essentially, the shape and structure of the EA 217 soft pad chair is identical to that of the Aluminum Group Chairs (Eames EA117, Eames EA118 and Eames EA119). All of these creations bear the unmistakable mark of the 20^th century design geniuses, Charles and Ray Eames.

Features

Materials

Carrying a formidable name of the Eames, the EA 217 is especially crafted for the customer using the finest materials and their signature impeccable craftsmanship. For today’s orders, the lead times is around 6 weeks, due to these exacting aspects that must be followed by the manufacturer.

The stitched leather upholstery gives the chair a softer and more comfortable quality. Side by side, the Eames EA 217 makes for a very interesting contrast with the slim aluminum profile. The backward tilt mechanism can be regulated and set in the forward-most position and fully adjustable seat height.

Finish

Polyurethane foam is used in the upholstery of the back rest and the seat.  There are three stitched cushions in the leather. The side profile and the clamping bracket are in die-cast aluminum. The arm rest are also in die-cast aluminum.

Like the base, the arm rests are also in die-cast aluminum (polished or in chrome-plated finish). The base has a choice of hard casters (for carpets) and soft casters for had floors. These are in black for polished base and in chrome for the chrome base.
